On Friday, September 11, the doctors at Gordon Schanzlin New Vision Institute became the first surgeons in San Diego to perform Epioxa, the first and only FDA-approved, epithelium-on cross-linking treatment for keratoconus. Unlike traditional cross-linking, Epioxa treats the cornea without removing its outer layer, which is designed to improve patient comfort and shorten recovery time.
What Is Keratoconus, and How Does Cross-Linking Treat It?
Keratoconus is a progressive eye condition that causes the cornea to thin and bulge into a cone shape, which distorts vision. Cross-linking treats keratoconus by strengthening the bonds between collagen fibers in the cornea, helping to slow or halt its progression. Traditional cross-linking, known as the epi-off method, requires removing the cornea’s outer layer before treatment, which can mean more discomfort and a longer recovery.
