When Should I Choose PRK Over LASIK?

photo248Although LASIK surgery is considered our primary procedure for laser vision correction at Gordon Schanzlin New Vision Institute Institute, there are some instances in which one of our experienced eye surgeons might recommend PRK:

  1. PRK is preferred over LASIK in the presence of certain corneal findings. For example, if your cornea is too thin, or if there is evidence of forme fruste keratoconus.
  2. PRK is sometimes chosen if there is moderate to severe dry eye as there is often less postoperative dry eye with PRK.
  3. PRK may also be a preferred procedure if your occupation or hobby runs the risk of being hit in the eye as this might dislodge a LASIK flap. For instance, if your profession or lifestyle contains a high degree of risk for facial impact – such as kickboxing or hockey – LASIK may not be the best choice for you. Military personnel are also often recommended PRK instead of LASIK.

Usually, if there are no signs of medical issues, we generally recommend LASIK surgery. Though the recovery period for PRK is a slightly longer, both LASIK and PRK provide excellent improvement in your vision.
