What is an Ophthalmologist?

Ophthalmologists and optometrists are both eye doctors. So, what are the differences between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist? Optometrists complete optometry school and hold a doctor of optometry (OD) degree. Ophthalmologists complete medical school and have an MD (doctor of medicine) or a DO (doctor of osteopathic medicine) degree. Ophthalmologists will often complete a medical residency and specialized surgical training as well. While both optometrists and ophthalmologists can perform eye exams and a range of vision care, only ophthalmologists perform surgery.

Which Type of Eye Doctor Do I Need?

At Gordon Schanzlin New Vision Institute, our experienced optometrists and ophthalmologists work together to provide comprehensive eye care. If you are interested in eye surgery, such as LASIK, or if you have a serious eye condition, you will see an ophthalmologist. An optometrist is a great choice for annual eye exams and contact lens fittings, and they will also help eye surgery patients with pre and post-surgical care.
